Weekly Summer Themes for School-Aged Kids

Ok guys, here it is, a list of Weekly Summer Themes. I’ve spent hours working on this and I have to say, I’ve enjoyed it! Maybe homeschool will be a success after all (fingers crossed!). If you follow me on Instagram and caught my stories, you heard me talking about the struggle we’ve had the last couple of weeks. The kids are BORED. I think it mostly has to do with the fact that we are still pretty much quarantined to our house and have been since early March. Typically in summer we’d spend time at the community pool, going to the local parks, playing with friends and taking day trips. We aren’t doing any of those things, or if we are they’re very different and limited. We haven’t even taken a trip to Target. That being said, I decided to try and have tailored activities to a theme/subject each week for the rest of summer. I’m hoping this will keep all of us busy and our minds off how each day feels like ground hogs day. I also think it will be a good taste for all of us into actual homeschool, which we’re considering for the 2020-2021 school year.

Our last day was May 22nd. We haven’t had much structure since then. We took a solid week off and last week started a very loose routine of morning chores and then school work using my favorite Summer Brain Quest books. The books are fairly short, which is great for a normal summer, but having so much time at home this year, I knew we were going to need more. I’ve really paced our seven year old and she is already almost done her book, in just two weeks.

So, here I am, trying to ease myself into being a teacher! I plan to create a post each week (hopefully the week BEFORE the theme). That won’t happen this time because I’m throwing this all together somewhat last minute. But if there are books, supplies or activities you guys want to purchase for the theme week, I want to allow time to get those. Just to clarify, I have ZERO teaching background. I’m simply doing this based on a need for my kids, and myself to have activities to do and my type A, Green personality needs to have a themed week with coordinating activities, ha!

I hope you guys are able to draw from this and that it is helpful in easing the inconveniences of this weird summer we’re in! Watch out for a post on next week’s theme either later today or tomorrow!
