This DIY Coat Rack was another brilliant idea of my husbands. We have a very long wall in our entryway and he came across a rustic pegboard in HomeGoods one day. At the time, we decided not to get it, because we weren’t sure what we were doing in the entryway yet. I had the idea of putting a bench there, but Kyle didn’t know how much he liked the idea. For some reason, he has always wanted a coat rack in our entryway, at both houses. I on the other hand, do not, because I know just how many coats will ACTUALLY end up hung up there!
Anyway, I really liked the idea of using a rustic coat rack as a decorative piece and hanging picture frames from ribbon on it. My original thought was to get a nice big board with iron pegs as the posts. However, we couldn’t find any iron pegs nearby, and I am impatient, so Kyle suggested using the hooks we had purchased from IKEA to go with some hanging baskets we had. We made a special trip to IKEA, but weren’t successful in finding more hooks (we only had two). However, they do now sell a pre-made shelf with the hooks. So, since we had two, we decided to buy the $10 shelf and just use those hooks. I’d post a link, but I can’t track down the shelf on their website. IKEA is wonderful, but I do find their website cumbersome to use. There is too much stuff!
This has, by far, been one of the easiest projects we’ve done to date in this house. It was a nice break, let me tell ya!
Here’s what you’ll need:
1- 2x8x8 (we cut ours down to 6 feet)
1- IKEA shelf with hooks- or find your own that you like
1- Can Rustoleum Dark Walnut stain
Here’s how to make it:
1) Cut down the 2x8x8 to your desired length
2) Sand ends and any other really rough spots to avoid splinters
3) Stain with 2 coats of Rustoleum Dark Walnut
4) Add hooks
5) Attach to wall. There are various ways you could do this. We just made pilot holes in four different places and and drilled directly into the wall, then filled those holes with some wood filler and stained over them.
